The new 13-inch MacBook Pro from Apple is the 1st to feature the Apple Silicon M2 processor, but it otherwise adheres to ancient design philosophy.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro was one of three devices that would use the M1 chip when Apple first unveiled it. The only MacBook Pro on the list offered a glimpse of what larger MacBook Pro models might have to offer and showed where Apple Silicon could go in the future.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro suddenly lost its place on the lineup after Apple unveiled the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, which both feature the M1 Pro and M1 Max.
There was not much of a reason to upgrade from the cheapest model to the second-cheapest one because there wasn’t much difference between the M2 MacBook Air and the 13-inch MacBook Pro unless you wanted a tiny bit more performance during prolonged processing runs with active cooling.
Apple introduces a new M2 chip with the second-generation Apple Silicon launch, and once again, Apple has upgraded both the MacBook Air and the 13-inch MacBook Pro by placing them in the value end of the MacBook range.
Design:
It was challenging to distinguish between the M1 and M2 MacBook Pros. There are no differences between the two models. It’s not that the design isn’t lovely and valuable; instead, it just appears out of date compared to the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the redesigned 2022 MacBook Air, both of which use a similar design language.
The bezels around the display’s edge are much thicker, and the screen is smaller on a 13-inch MacBook Pro than on any other Mac laptop. Nevertheless, depending on your perspective, this might be one advantage. Except for the M1 MacBook Air, which is still available, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is currently the only Mac laptop without a notch.
The notch’s function is to house the camera, allowing Apple to narrow the top bezel and raise the screen slightly. Some believe the notch detracts from the design, while others point out that because the menu situates on either side of the notch, there isn’t any less usable space as a result (although it can get in the way in full-screen mode). Battery:
Better battery life is another promise made by the M2 processor, which delivers. According to Apple, the laptop can play videos for up to 20 hours, two hours longer than the Air. This figure is comparable to the M1 generation of the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Still, in that case, Apple specified 20 hours for movie playback via the Apple TV app rather than just movies (suggesting that it achieved those heights when using Apple’s video-optimized app). Again, based on my actual usage, that feels about right. You can leave your power brick at home since the battery lasts a full day of use without access to a power outlet.
Touch Bar & Keyboard:
The MacBook Pro 13-inch stands out in Apple’s lineup because it is the only MacBook still equipped with the touchscreen Touch Bar, retaining every aspect of the previous generation’s physical design. It was a divisive addition when the Touch Bar substituted the conventional row of function keys in earlier MacBook Pro laptops. One modification since its initial release is that Apple made the touchscreen strip shorter so that a physical Esc key can place on the left side, possibly in response to complaints that users kept accidentally brushing the Touch Bar.
Touch Bar:
The Touch Bar isn’t for everyone, but I adore its adaptability and simple design. In relevant applications, the Touch Bar can predict words or email addresses for me, or it can display tiny thumbnails of all the open web pages while you’re using Safari. My favorite Touch Bar feature: The Touch Bar will display back and forward arrows for you to tap in place of the back and forward buttons if I move the Safari window to the left and partially block them. Sadly, I believe this may be the last laptop to have it; it is unknown whether or not programmers will be working on new features that fully utilize the Touch Bar.
Keyboard:
The Magic Keyboard is a fantastic keyboard that is so comfortable you’ll wish all keyboards were this good. The keys on the keyboard are warm and the right size, with plenty of travel and good responsiveness. Whether you’re writing your magnum opus or a quick email, the keyboard will come in handy.
MacBook Pro M2 worth buying:
This 13-inch edition of the Apple MacBook Pro is the least expensive choice if you desire one. The 14-inch model has a newer look and a bigger screen, but the price difference is astounding. The price for the 14-inch model is $700 more at $1,999.
Although the new design is terrific, there is a significant pricing gap. The traditional appearance of the MacBook Pro 13-inch, which has a display that is just 0.9 inches smaller, will likely make many people happy (and no notch). For only $100 more than the Air with its slower processor, you can obtain a Pro-tier laptop with the fastest M2 processor on the market. Fans of the Touch Bar looking to upgrade will value this model as a single, simple option. MacBook Pro 13-inch is the real deal and a fantastic value if someone is accustomed to the performance of a MacBook Pro and plans to conduct processor-intensive jobs involving video and photography.
